DefinitionThe Substitute - Medical Assistant coordinates and performs a variety of medical clinic office services.Definition:Under general supervisor, substitute employees perform a variety of work in support of a college or district program or office.Non-academic, non-classified substitute: vacancy employees are appointed temporarily when recruiting to fill a permanent position. Non-academic, non-classified substitute: no vacancy employees replace classified employees who are temporarily absent from duty.Non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are not part of classified service. Non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are at-will employees, have no entitlement rights to any position in the District. Substitute employment shall not result in the displacement of Classified personnel.Substitute non classified employees who are appointed temporarily while the District is recruiting for the permanent position may not exceed 130 working days within a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).Substitute non classified employees who are temporarily replacing a classified employee may not exceed 160 working days within a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).* Retired CalPERS Annuitants: may not exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30)*REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:* Coordinates clinic office activities to facilitate provider, patient, records, and business activity. Receives walk-in guests and telephone inquiries from staff and students. Explains Health Services Center services, procedures, and payment policies. Provides students with reference materials, internal and external resources, and program information.* Schedules clinic appointments according to established hours of service. Makes initial determination for the level of provider to be seen (e.g., RN, FNP, Physician). Organizes medical information files to correspond with appointment schedules.* Performs preliminary medical "work ups" such as basic patient information and records vital signs and other observations. Collects specimens and arranges for pick-up by laboratories, receives test results, places information into the medical record, and with health care providers.* Under the supervision of a nurse practitioner or doctor, sets up examination rooms and equipment before and after use. Ensures that surfaces, equipment, fixtures, and supplies are properly cleaned, stored, and organized for efficient access by providers.* Compiles health and demographic information from students, noting health history including social and emotional aspects. Refers student to appropriate internal and external resources to meet identified health, social and mental health needs. Prepares patient activity statistics such as the frequency and nature of visits and consultations.* Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.Qualifications and Physical DemandsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education and ExperienceThe position typically requires a high school diploma and post-secondary education in Medical Assisting Program. Two years' experience is preferred. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.Knowledge and SkillsThe knowledge required will vary depending on the nature of the assignment.AbilitiesThe abilities required will vary depending on the nature of the assignment.Physical AbilitiesThe physical abilities required will vary depending on the nature of the assignment.Licenses and CertificatesRequires a valid California driver license. Requires a valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certificate.
